Staff at St. Cloud Schools closely reflect the local community

ST. CLOUD – The diversity among the St. Cloud area school district staff is a true reflection of the central Minnesota community.

The annual staff demographic report was presented at tonight’s board meeting (Wednesday). Currently, 87 percent of the district’s unlicensed staff, teachers and administration are white and 13 percent non-white.

This closely mirrors data from the 2020 Stearns County Census which shows a population of 87.5% White, 7.8% Black, 3.6% Hispanic, 2.5% Asian Islander- peaceful and 0.4% American Indians.

Executive Director of Human Resources Tracy flynn bowe says everyone benefits from a diverse staff.

Having a diverse staff is essential to increase the academic performance of all groups of students, to prepare our students to learn, live and work in a racially diverse and global world, and to provide equitable educational opportunities for all of our students. .

The current racial distribution of students in the district is 61.30 percent non-white and 38.7 percent white. These numbers have changed dramatically, from 59.72% whites and 40.28% non-whites in the 2013-2014 school year.

The district has also seen an increase in racial diversity across all categories of staff over the past eight years, despite teachers of color making up only four to five percent of the workforce. State. That number drops to 1.2 percent of the workforce in central Minnesota.

Much of this increase is due to the Grow Your Own program and partnering with St. Cloud State University to train unlicensed staff for teacher residency and future teachers’ academy.

More than 100 historically black colleges and universities are designated by the US Department of Education, meeting the definition of a school “established before 1964, whose primary mission was, and is, the education of black Americans.”
