Southwest Michigan Food Council engages local marketing agency to develop initial communications campaign

ST. JOSEPH, Mich., February 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The Southwest Michigan Local Food Council (SWMLFC) — accredited in 2017 by the Michigan Local Food Council Network and Be Healthy Berrien — recently completed its search for a lead marketing agency and selected JohnsonRauhoff (JR) as its new partner. “We were impressed with their proposal, and now we can’t wait to get the ball rolling with JR,” said Jean Egelhaaf, who is the executive director of the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission and president of the SWMLFC. “We have exciting plans for our organization in the years to come, and we believe JR will play a key role in helping us achieve our goals.”

The Council has three main objectives. It seeks to celebrate and promote foods grown in the Southwest Michigan; increase the abundance of locally grown foods; and supporting the growth of food infrastructure by doing things like drafting model zoning ordinances for urban agriculture – all with the goal of ensuring food equity for area residents.

The Council’s primary mission for JR is to create a distinctive brand for foods that are grown and produced in the Southwest Michigan. This initiative is funded by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture. The new brand will help increase consumer awareness and preference for the wide variety of delicious and nutritious locally grown food options that also help support the region’s economy. In addition, JR is developing a strategic go-to-market plan that will be rolled out starting this summer.

Southwest Michigan is a valuable agricultural region that produces a wide variety of fruits and vegetables every year,” said Aaron Molter, owner of Molter Produce. “I am thrilled that the Council and JR are working together to create a brand that will build awareness of the region’s abundant pick-your-own operations and farmers’ markets.”

“We are delighted that the Council has selected us for this work,” said mike huie, chairman of JohnsonRauhoff. “JR is based in Benton Harbor/Saint Joseph for over 50 years so of course we are a big booster for all things south west Michigan. We can’t wait to shine a light on another great thing about this region.”
