Santos: Rugby Festival for the benefit of the local community

The Roma community stands to benefit in more ways than one from the Santos Festival of Rugby coming to town in less than a fortnight.

Santos general manager and CEO Kevin Gallagher said the event will not only bring the region together, but inject nearly $1 million through direct and indirect spending into the community.

“Santos are delighted to partner with the Queensland Reds to bring the Festival of Rugby to Rome for the first time ever,” said Mr Gallagher.

“Santos has operated in Queensland for over 50 years and we want to make a positive social contribution to the communities where we operate.

“As part of the Festival of Rugby, Santos has worked with Queensland Rugby, the Queensland Government and Maranoa Regional Council as well as local businesses to improve local infrastructure and make significant improvements to Roma’s home ground. Echidna.

“Our first-ever Rugby Festival held last year in Narrabri in New South Wales has brought a series of improvements to sporting facilities and economic benefits for the town, including record trade and sales for venues local hospitality.

“We look forward to similar results in Rome this year.”

Economic modeling shows that the event in Narrabri contributed over $375,000 in indirect expenses to the city, with an additional $375,000 spent on local vendors for fieldwork and festival-related goods and services and $200 $000 additional for infrastructure upgrades.

Over 3,600 people attended the event in Narrabri in 2021, with local accommodation at full capacity and local vendors involved in signage, catering, merchandise, team jersey dry cleaning and more .

Mr Gallagher said tickets were still available for the upcoming Santos Rugby Festival.

“The Santos Festival of Rugby is a fantastic opportunity to support grassroots sports, bring local communities together and inject tourism dollars into Roma businesses,” said Mr Gallagher.

“Last year alone in the Maranoa Regional Council, Santos spent almost A$100 million partnering with local businesses, buying local products and using local services.

“By supporting communities like Roma, caring for the environment and reducing our emissions, Santos is building a better future for Australia.”
