Barely 24 hours after Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello instructed security officers to launch a full-scale war against gunmen in the state after the killing of 37 people in Nakundna and Wurukuchi in Shiroro local government last week, the gunmen responded to the Governor with a major attack on some communities in Kontagora and Mashegun local government areas of the state, killing three people and abducting 28 others.
The governor, while reacting to the massacres of the past week, said it was time to launch a major offensive against terrorists in the state, calling the massacre of 37 villagers “crazy and barbaric”.
The latest attacks took place in Farin-Shinge in Kontagora Local Government, a Governor’s Local Government, and in Kulho, Jigawa, Dogo Fadama communities in the Mashegu Local Government Area of ​​the state.
It was established that the gunmen carried out the assault on the communities between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
According to our source, in the community of Farin-Shinge, a few kilometers from Kontagora, the seat of Kontagora local government, the gunmen struck around 1:45 p.m. as people were preparing to observe the jummaat (Friday prayer) and abducted eight people as worshipers scramble for safety.
Kontagora Local Government Area Vice Chairman Aliyu Makiga, who confirmed the attack to Farin Shinge, said the gunmen crossed the Tegina road in large numbers, adding that security guards attempted to thwart the attack but had met strong resistance from the well-equipped gunners.
According to him, “they kidnapped a lot of people but some were released when their motorbikes couldn’t carry them all and others are still with them.
“They demand a ransom of seven numbers 50 liters of jerry cans of gasoline, Viju milk and other drinks, including Provisions. They haven’t made any monetary demands yet,” he said.
Another group of gunmen also attacked Jigawa, Dogo Fadama and surrounding communities, killing two people while four others were abducted.
A resident of the Jigawa community, Umar Mohammed, confirmed the invasion, saying the gunmen took their time searching homes and stealing large numbers of cattle in the process.
He said the attack which also happened on Friday caught the community off guard but the majority of residents managed to escape as they ran into the bush before they (gunmen) n arrive.
The operation, they said, began around 3:30 p.m. and lasted until around 6:00 p.m. with no help coming out of nowhere despite several distress calls being made to security guards.
A source close to the Kulho community said one victim identified as Alhaji Tanko Kulho was shot dead and 16 people abducted, adding that shops were ransacked and more than 18 motorbikes were stolen by the invaders .
A Kulho resident, Abdulrahman Kulho Adamu, who confirmed the attack by telephone to our correspondent, said that six members of his family, including his three older brothers, were among those abducted.
“We were all sitting in the market square when we saw many motorbikes carrying at least three people each, and well armed with AK 47 rifles arrived in the community, and before we knew what was going on they started to fire sporadically in the air.
“People started running and while doing so, a certain Alhaji Tanko was shot dead by the gunmen. The operation started around 3:48 p.m. and they left Kulho around 6:07 p.m.,” he revealed.
Speaking further, he said, “Many people have been abducted. Six members of my family were abducted, including my older brothers Yakubu Kulho, Gambo Kulho, Haruna Nda kulho, my younger brother, Baba Nda Karami, my nephew, Mohammed Gaddafi and my older brother’s wife, Salaha Haruna Kulho. Six of them in my family were kidnapped”.
