FAIRBORN, Ohio – Wright-Patterson Air Force Base employees have partnered with the City of Fairborn and the Beavercreek Wetlands Association to host a community clean-up event to celebrate Earth Day at the community park.
This year’s event attracted over 50 people to pick up trash in the park.
“We are thrilled to partner with the City of Fairborn and BCWA to celebrate Earth Day again to help support and beautify our local community,” said Danielle Trevino, biologist with the Environmental Branch of the 88th Civil Engineer Group. “Caring for our planet should be a priority for all of us.”
The theme for this year’s Earth Day was “Investing in our Planet”.
“Investing in the planet should be a priority for everyone. We can all do small things to create a more sustainable planet,” she added. “Most of the waste in our community is not biodegradable and this makes our communities unsafe for wildlife, and the microplastics end up finding their way into our soil, rivers and oceans…creating even more environmental problems. “
Investing in the planet doesn’t just have to happen on Earth Day, says Beth Edsall, Outreach Director for the Beavercreek Wetlands Association.
“When working in your garden, avoid using pesticides as they run off and enter our water system and streams,” she said. “On a tangible note, use reusable products to reduce waste in our landfills, pick up litter and prevent it from escaping your cars, and be sure to recycle eligible items.”
Edsall and Trevino agree that the local effort has been beneficial.
“We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who took the time to come out today and make the event a success,” Edsall said. “It turned out to be a great Earth Day afternoon, and we were able to do good for both our environment and our community.”
Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 when a protest was held to raise awareness of environmental issues. It has been celebrated since April 22 and more than 190 countries around the world now participate.
