Vedanta subsidiary sensitizes local communities on good nutritional practices during ‘POSHAN Maah‘

In observance of ‘POSHAN Maah’, Bharat Aluminum Company Limited (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminum producer and subsidiary of Vedanta Aluminum, has embarked on a month-long awareness program on food and nutrition, healthy eating practices, balanced diet, importance of food, etc.
Under the POSHAN (Prime Minister’s Comprehensive Program for Holistic Nutrition) or the National Nutrition Mission of the Government of India, the month of September is celebrated as Nutrition Month. Upholding the mission, BALCO works to sensitize local communities on the different dimensions of nutrition in order to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women and nursing mothers.
The awareness campaign is being conducted as part of Project Arogya, BALCO’s global community health program. The campaign includes various activities such as interactive discussions, positive deviance focus sessions that educate on practices to reduce the prevalence of malnutrition in children under five, question and answer sessions, an audio-visual showcase , etc. on information related to nutrition in order to build participants on positive nutritional behaviors and good practices to follow on a daily basis. They are also trained in the preparation and consumption of take-home rations provided under government programs.
Agricultural experts have been mobilized to teach them “Poshan Badi” or nutritional gardens and seed kits are also distributed to community members. The Healthy Recipes and Healthy Baby competitions also serve as platforms to raise awareness among the contestants’ families and friends. BALCO also hosts a “Godh Bharayi” community event to celebrate pregnancy and in doing so, educate expectant mothers about their own health and prenatal care of the baby. As part of Vedanta’s Nand Ghar project, BALCO also provides training on hygienic and nutritional pre-cooked meals to mittens and mothers of children enrolled in Nand Ghar.
Speaking about BALCO’s dedicated efforts to improve the nutrition levels of women and children, Abhijit Pati, CEO and Director of BALCO said, “Nutrition and health are two of the key areas of our community development efforts, and we pay particular attention to improving health. quotient of women and children. Expressing her gratitude, Khushboo Chaudhary, a resident of Nehru Nagar, who participated in the awareness campaign, said, “I attended the take-home ration training, which showed how to really bring out the nutritional benefits of the food. . I am happy that I can now provide my children with nutritious meals. These awareness campaigns have greatly helped our community. Like Khushboo, more than 100 people have benefited from the sessions. BALCO expects to reach 500 community members during the month.
The “Arogya” project is a comprehensive health initiative providing quality primary health care services through rural health posts and awareness campaigns on tuberculosis, HIV and maternal and child health. In FY22, the project reached more than 28,900 people with curative and preventive health care services in 30 communities.
