Let others do the driving as you travel around this scenic tropical island

Passenger Preference

Dominica Taxis

Taxis can be found in a number of locations in Dominica, including Roseau, the airports, and a number of hotels. Travelers can use taxi service intermittently during their trip, or they can use taxis as their primary means of transportation, as long as they are not traveling during late-night hours.

Taxis are readily available to transport passengers arriving at either Melville Hall or Canefield Airport to their final destination on the island. Taxi drivers should be uniformed, and rates are fixed by the government. License plates of taxi vehicles should contain the letters"HA" or"H." Sample fares per person from the airports to the major cities of Roseau and Portsmouth are as follows:

  • Melville Hall Airport to Roseau: $16(USD)

  • Melville Hall Airport to Portsmouth: $12(USD)

  • Canefield Airport to Roseau: $8(USD)

Special fares can be negotiated with taxi drivers to carry a number of passengers going to the same destination. The Dominica Taxi Association can be reached at 767-449-8533, while the Nature Island Taxi Association can be contacted at 767-448-1679.

More than 300 miles of roads connect the various treasured sites and towns of Dominica. Allowing others to handle driving responsibilities while on the island gives travelers the opportunity to gaze at the beauty of the local environs as the scenery unfolds outside the window. Taxi drivers have a wealth of experience and knowledge when it comes to the local landscape and can be excellent tour guides for visitors on the island. Travelers can pay between $70(USD) to $90(USD) for tours lasting up to five hours. Tours can also be taken by the hour; taxi drivers will provide the rates.

Although taxis can be useful options for transportation around Dominica, there are several limitations to this service. Taxis can be difficult to find after around 6:00 p.m., which means travelers may have to arrange transportation for a set time beforehand. Additionally, the public minivan buses are typically more affordable than taxi fares, and car rentals may also often turn out to be more cost-efficient.

Travelers who will not be doing extensive traveling on the island may wish to take taxis where they need to go. Whether you are simply going to the airport or to the rainforest, taxi drivers can provide friendly transportation to most sites in Dominica.
