Activities in Dominica

It is easy to find something to do during your vacation in Dominica.  With friendly waters and trails the island is the perfect place for natural activities such as hiking, diving, and fishing, but the shopping and nightlife as superb as well.  Round out your cultural experience by attending an annual event.

Watersports

...explore an underwater volcanic crater...

Because Dominica is known as one of the top destinations in the world for snorkeling and diving, you won't want to leave the island without participating in at least one of these activities.  The volcanic make-up of Dominica makes for intriguing underwater sites and  sharp drop-offs.  Divers can even explore an underwater volcanic crater at  Scott's Head Marine Reserve.

If going under water isn't your style, chartering a boat and heading out for a day of fishing is an option as well.  Three of the top charter companies are Castle Comfort Dive Lodge, Island Style Fishing, and JC Ocean Adventures.  Each will take you out for a deep sea fishing, where you might catch barracuda, bonito, dorado, mackerel, marlin, sailfish, skipjack, tarpon, tuna, wahoo, or yellowfin.

Sports

You don't have to leave your exercise routine at home during your vacation, but you may do well to adapt it.  Swimming laps in your resort's pool, or hiking through the rainforest are great ways to get your heart rate up.  Often vacationers show interest in playing a game of tennis or a round of golf while they are in the Caribbean, however, Dominica is not necessarily the place you want to go for these activities.  While there are a few hotels that have tennis courts, the only option for golf in Dominica is a miniature golf course.

Shopping

Many people find that shopping in Dominica is an enjoyable experience all around.  The shops tend to be uncrowded and typically accept US dollars.  On top of this, there are a number of duty free shops that sell luxury goods such as perfume, high end clothing, glassware, liquor, and cigars.  If you want to bring home an extra special souvenir, keep your eyes peeled for items handcrafted by locals, such as Carib inspired carvings and pottery.

Events and Festivals

A great way to pass the time in Dominica is by attending an event or festival put on by the people of Dominica.  These parties showcase the things that matter to islanders, such as diving, music, literacy, and gardening.  Check the daily paper while you are in Dominica to see what happenings are going on during your stay. Nightlife

Nightlife in Dominica can be described as energetic, but not out of control.  Most visitors opt to stick to the bars and shows on their resort's property, but those who want to venture out will find the most action in Roseau.

Whether you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground, or dive into the waters that surround Dominica, there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied during your island vacation.
